Summer by Edith Wharton

i really liked this book. granted, i’m not the biggest fan of post civil war literature, but for some reason, this female author rocks the scene.

summer is about a woman, Charity (a name which bears so much symbolism in the story), who was born of a prostitute who ended up giving her child to Mr. Royall (symbolically named as well), to raise her in North Dormer, an affluent society brimming with expectations, and restrictions. Charity has discovered her budding sexuality and desire to exhibit her freedom through her love for Harney, but is restricted by the prying eyes of the town, and her protector Mr. Royall- who is caught in the love triangle as he claims his love for her.

I like this book better than Ethan Frome. Although both included a steamy love triangle, this one has more sybolism in its names, its characters, its setting, and of items in the novel. It’s rich with the sentiment of its time, mainly focusing on the condition of women who are not of affluent families, and their struggle to survive in a patriarchal society. She symbolizes the hopelessness of escaping into her own freedom and finding fulfilment or success, and therefore is coerced to live a life static, void of passion and freedom, instead, adhering to the limitations pressed upon her.

this was an easy read…highly emotional and entertaining. i enjoyed it, and i would love to share my ideas on it.

Ethan Frome

Ethan Frome was published 1911, the story set in a small town of New England. the plot is fairly simple. there is Ethan, who supposedly stayed for “too many Starkfield winters.” he married his cousin who had taken care of his sick mother, and who eventually and ironically ended up being “sickly” herself (from hypochondria). he ends up falling in love with mattie, the cousin and help of Zenna (his wife).

There are turns of events, and psychological decisions, manipulations, and conniving motivation hidden within each character, even the narrator. This is what adds further dimension to the intriguing love and power triangle.

i gave the book a 3.5 because i didn’t think it was exceptional in comparison to other books i’ve read, but it has been my favorite so far in my American Literature 1865-1914 class. it also has a lot of perspectives you can take, whether in gender or social classification. plus, talk about unrequited love.

got to work a little bit later than usual … a couple of hours later i felt a little tingling sensation in my tummy … you know what that means? so i went to the john to do my bizzle-dizzle and halfway through my pajizzle, i heard snoring from the next partition … how boring can defejizzle be when you end up falling asleep?

that was funny … as tbs would probably grade it … moderately funny.

crazy-snoring-guy in the restroom.

the 23rd week report

March 2nd, 2005 | Marchesa Ababa | No Comments

well here it is:

here’s a report of my baby at her 23rd week…seems so close to her birthday. hopefully soon, we’ll have our 2nd ultrasound to maybe better determine the gender and make sure all the anatomical necessities are ok.

Your Baby Week 23
Your baby now weighs almost 1 lb (450g) and measures about 8 inches (20cm) from crown to rump.
She is becoming plumper as her fat is being laid down at a high rate, but her skin is still wrinkled and reddish. The wrinkled and loose appearance of her skin is due to the faster production of her skin than the fat that fills it out. The reddish appearance of her skin is due to the deposition of pigment as her skin loses its translucent appearance.
Your baby can kick and punch vigorously by now, but she may also be gently feeling the umbilical cord and rubbing her hands and face against the inside membrane of the amniotic sac that holds her.
She is still swallowing amniotic fluid (which provides an important nutritional supplement to the nutrition she gets from you via the placenta) and is passing some of it as urine. The swallowing of the amniotic fluid may cause your baby to get the hiccups and you may even be able to feel this as her body jumps inside yours.
The lanugo hair on your baby’s body may turn darker at this time.

first kick of my baby ninja

March 1st, 2005 | Marchesa Ababa | No Comments

in the beginning of the 5th month, i’ve been feeling baby’s tiny little kicks here and there, to the left and to the right, as well as baby’s position. my baby also seems to be a ninja due to her constant kicking of my bladder, which she may mistake as her first toy. when she kicks it, it’s as if i have to pee for a wee second.

perze hasn’t been able to feel baby’s kicks but yesterday night, we waited until baby kicked right below his hand, and perze was surprised to finally have felt such a tiny push. baby ninja is so amazing, and it’s good know she’s right on time and doing great.

also, yesterday, dr. salvatore called me and gave me positive results with the rest of my blood tests, so everything looks healthy and ok. we’re now just waiting to reschedule our second ultrasound with cooper since kennedy had some slip ups with our insurance.
